Pioneer Blues guitarist Robert Johnson - Black History MonthOnce again it’s February which means its Black History Month – a time to acknowledge the outstanding contributions that African Americans have made to American culture.

From the Blues to Jazz, from spirituals to R&B, from Rock to Hip Hop, this country’s music scene has been immeasurably enriched by what is often referred to as “the Black Experience.”

Anyone could fill an entire website with examples of Black musicians who have become cultural icons – I’m sure its already been done, many times over. Here, I’ve included just a tiny sampling of the musicians who have had a profound impact on American music. Any omissions have been purely for the sake of space.

Back in 1964, the great Sam Cooke sang, “It’s been a long time coming, but I know a change is gonna come.” Although we have come a long way, unfortunately, we’re not yet where we need to be in this country. There’s still lots of work to do. But sometimes, looking back can show us not only where we’ve been but also where we need to go. Here’s hoping that this small tribute will help to keep us on that road.
